Day 37: Decorating Simple Walls Masterfully

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students DECORATING SIMPLE WALLS MASTERFULLY Grammar Point: Passive Voice vs. Active Voice In the highlands of Peru, adobes are used to build houses. Since adobes are made of mud mixed with straw, most houses have a simple appearance, especially those owned by people who cannot afford to add a nice finish to the outer walls of their houses. Many of those people may not be proud of that. However, an appreciative eye can look at the bright side of that reality: Those simple walls turn into beautiful mosaics of shadows and light once the sunset approaches and the late afternoon sunlight riches each of the pale adobes in those walls. Today, I want to thank God because we are surrounded by things that come from him that can masterfully add the nicest finishes to all the things we make. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 36: The Ballet Dancers

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students THE BALLET DANCERS Grammar Point: Make + Object Pronoun + Verb Some time ago, a flower outside my house made me realize that I needed a friendly reminder. Its colors and its shape made it look like a ballet dancer. I was going to take a picture of it when, suddenly, I noticed that there was another flower right next to it that had not bloomed yet. They made me think of a ballet dancer patiently waiting for his partner to be ready for a show. At that moment, I decided to photograph the blooming process, which took just two days of close observation. Finally, I got the picture I wanted: The Ballet Dancers! Today, I want to thank God for making me remember the value of enjoying the process that it takes for something beautiful to happen. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 35: Patience

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students PATIENCE Grammar Point: Dropping That I wish I were as patient with people as I am with picture taking. When I take a photograph, I know I have to wait patiently to take the right shot at the right time because it all depends on the subject in the picture and the circumstances that surround that subject. For instance, I cannot make a flower bloom faster. I have no control over how much light or wind there is around that flower, either─especially outdoors─. Today, I want to thank God because I have recently gotten reminded of the importance of being patient not only with the subjects in my pictures and the circumstances that surround them but also with the people around me and their circumstances in order to bring the best out of others. Day 34: The Right Closing Words

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students THE RIGHT CLOSING WORDS Grammar Point: Passive Voice with the Present Perfect Tense Some 1,900 years ago, a man named John wrote a letter to a friend, Gaius. In his letter, John commends Gaius for his love for others. What were John’s closing words in the letter? He wrote: “I had many things to write you, but I do not wish to go on writing you with pen and ink. However, I am hoping to see you soon, and we will speak face-to-face.”  * John’s letter to Gaius has been translated into about 2,600 languages. Those closing words have not only been read by millions but have also been quoted by some who still write letters today. I want to thank God─today─for the heartwarming closing words in a letter I got from a nice group of friends some weeks ago. READ MORE HERE. Day 33: One Hundred Eighty Friends

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY FRIENDS Grammar Point: Adverb Clauses How many friends can you make in 2 weeks? It all depends on who you call friends. For some people, a friend is someone whom you care about even if you don’t know him or her in person. Others claim that a friend is someone whose company you enjoy, no matter their age. Some believe that a friend is someone who loves you despite your flaws and imperfections. Maybe, there are people who think that a friend is a person you want to see again soon. Very likely, some feel that a friend is someone who will always be part of your good memories. If all of those people are right, I want to thank God─today─for the more than 180 friends I have made recently. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 32: There Is Always a Better Way

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students THERE IS ALWAYS A BETTER WAY Grammar Point: Too and Enough Like a month ago, a friend and I had to make breakfast─oatmeal─ for 25 people. I thought we were going to need 3 of his cooking pots because they all were too small to make enough oatmeal for everybody using only one . He said, “We’ll talk about it tomorrow.” Next day, I got to his house early enough to make breakfast. In his kitchen, I asked him where the 3 pots were and if I could turn on the stove. He smiled and said that the pots were too small and took me to his patio. He had already started making the oatmeal in a really big old pot in his wood stove! Today, I want to thank God because my friends─very often─have better ideas than me. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 31: Vanilla and Chocolate

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students VANILLA AND CHOCOLATE Grammar Point: Imperatives My favorite dessert has only vanilla cookies and chocolate pudding. The first time I tried it─made by my best friend’s sister in Chosica, Lima─was 22 years ago. I have made it many times for my friends. It is really easy. First, place a layer of vanilla cookies on the base. Then, spread chocolate pudding on it . Repeat until you have 5 layers of cookies. Top the last layer of cookies with chocolate pudding and decorate it. Finally, put it in the refrigerator. Make it in a rectangular glass baking dish or in individual dessert glasses. Actually, I used disposable dishes last time! What really matters is with whom you are having it and why. Today, I want to thank God for letting me make this dessert for others. READ MORE HERE. Day 30: Snakes and Spiders

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students SNAKES AND SPIDERS Grammar Point: Present Perfect vs. Present Perfect Continuous A simple conversation can change how we view things in a second. I have been living in a nice small apartment for almost four months. To get to the apartment, I have to cross a beautiful garden. Actually, I have taken a lot of pictures of the garden. One night, Yolanda─the owner of the apartment’s sister─, other friends, and I got together for dinner. At the table, someone started talking about snakes and spiders. All of a sudden, Yolanda told me, “There are a lot where you live... because of the garden.” Since that day, I have been making sure there aren’t any in my bed before going to sleep. Today, I want to thank God... not for a perfect apartment, but for the garden in front of it. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 29: What Makes Someone's Hands Beautiful

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students WHAT MAKES SOMEONE'S HANDS BEAUTIFUL Grammar Point: Modals What makes someone’s hands beautiful? Different people have different opinions. Some would say that someone’s hands should look young to be beautiful. Others may claim that the proportions of your fingers and hand palms matter. However, if you are surrounded by generous people─especially people with little means─, you can strongly say that beautiful hands are those that are generous. It is heartwarming to see that─most of the time─the less someone has the more generous that person is, like my friend Rosita. She is elderly and sick. Even though she receives no pension, she always shares what she has with others: food, cleaning products, or a few coins of little value. Her hands are beautiful indeed! Today, I want to thank God for all the generous people that surround me. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 28: Little Things That Happen

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students LITTLE THINGS THAT HAPPEN Grammar Point: Adjectives Little things can make our days happy. Today, I talked to an old lady who was selling fodder in the local market. It was all green around her. In the middle of so much green, a beautiful small yellow flower caught my eye. Immediately, I got my cell phone and took a picture of it . I did not imagine that looking at such a simple picture later would remind me of other little things that happened earlier, like running into a good friend who treated me with a delicious meal, or like receiving a message with upbuilding words from a friend from Lima. I did not see those things coming! Today, I want to thank God for all those little things that have been making my days memorable. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 27: Tocosh

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students TOCOSH Grammar Point: Stative Verbs I like tocosh . Tocosh is a pudding-like dessert from the highlands in Peru. It is prepared from fermented potatoes, corn, or ocas. People call it chuño in Otuzco. Since it has sugar and cinnamon, it tastes good. However, because of its fermented main ingredient, tocosh smells awful! One evening, during my first week here, I was walking in the street when I noticed something smelled really bad. The smell was familiar to me. Then, I saw a group of people sitting and eating─holding disposable dishes─on the sidewalk. Also, I saw a lady with a big plastic bucket─on the floor─selling something. It was tocosh , which I used to eat as a child! Today, I want to thank God for the tocosh I get here from a friend some Wednesdays. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 26: The Nights with a Full Moon

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students THE NIGHTS WITH A FULL MOON Grammar Point: Can My friends and I like the nights here with a full moon. We can do volunteer work even in distant parts of our territory without problems. We sometimes have to cross dark areas with no light poles. They can have uneven terrain that can make walking difficult. However, if there is a full moon, our work becomes easier. The streets get well-lit and we can stay out later than usual. A full moon also adds to the beauty of the quiet nights. During the dry season, the sky is usually clear at night and we can see the moon and enjoy the contrast between the bright shiny moon and the dark sky. Today, I want to thank God for the nights here with a full moon. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 25: The Fruit Here

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students THE FRUIT HERE Grammar Point: So + Adjective Fruit in Otuzco is good and cheap. People bring fruit here from different areas. In the summer, big trucks bring mangoes from the coast. The mangoes are so big that two can easily weigh more than a kilo. The trucks park by the market and sell five mangoes for 1 sol. I could not believe they were so cheap the first time I got some ! In the winter, there are a lot of oranges. My favorite oranges are the local ones, the ones grown in a nearby valley. They are called naranjas serranas. They are really good to make orange juice. You can buy 8 for 1 sol! Generally, good fruit in Lima is not so cheap. Today, I want to thank God for the fruit I get here. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 24: Some I will Never Forget

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students SOME I WILL NEVER FORGET Grammar Point: Simple Present vs. Present Continuous I will never forget the couples I have met here. One of them─out of many ─is very hospitable. They always open their hands to help others and entertain friends in their house. They always give you the best they have. They are working abroad at the moment and will be back soon. There is another couple that is special, too. He is 82; she is 92. She is sick now; he is not strong anymore. However, he is loyally taking care of her with self-sacrificing love now that she is infirm and very fragile. There are times when he feels sad and about to give up. However, he is doing the best he can. Today, I want to thank God for the good example these couples are setting for me. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…

Day 23: "Have a Seat, Please"

Image
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DAYS IN 120 WORDS Readings for EFL Students “HAVE A SEAT, PLEASE” Grammar Point: Or, But, So, and Because  Most people are kind to strangers here─especially in remote areas. When my friend and I do volunteer work and visit people at their homes, they always greet us kindly after opening their doors. They do not know my friend and me but they let us in. Then, they grab a chair or a stool and say, “Have a seat, please.” That is how they show their kindness and hospitality. We should not decline their invitation to sit. That would be disrespectful, so we always sit. Sometimes there are only chairs for my friend and me, not for the householders. When that happens, they stand in front of us until we leave because they want us to feel welcomed. Today, I want to thank God for these people’s kindness. READ MORE HERE. Cargando…
