I would join Fernando’s family for lunch on Mondays. His wife would always apologize because─in her opinion─Fernando’s food was too spicy. One day, he made ceviche. It had so much rocoto that his wife and I were sweating while eating it, but Fernando couldn’t believe we found the dish spicy! By the time he served the soup, his wife and I had been having a hard time trying to eat the ceviche, which Fernando─of course─had already eaten up. Suddenly, his wife and I realized that Fernando’s eyes had gotten watery: The hot soup he was having right after the spicy ceviche was making him cry, even though he had not put any rocoto in his soup! Today, I want to thank God for reminding me that men do cry.
