HOW MANY, THERE IS and THERE ARE

¿Qué significa "there is"? ¿Qué significa "there are"? Para empezar, recuerda que la forma original de "there is" y "there are" es "there be". ¿Cuándo usas "there be"? Lo usas para hablar de "existencia", es decir, de las cosas que hay, o no hay, en un lugar. Memoriza lo siguiente con relación a oraciones afirmativas y negativas:
  • there is / hay (singular)
  • there isn't / no hay (singular)
  • there are / hay (plural)
  • there aren't / no hay (plural)
Podrás ver ejemplos a continuación. Primero, ten en cuenta que, generalmente, "there is" y "there are" responden preguntas con "how many". ¿Qué significa "how many"? Mira los siguientes ejemplos.
  • How many people are there in your family? / ¿Cuántas personas hay en tu familia?
  • There are five people in my family. / Hay cinco personas en mi familia.
  • How many rooms are there in your house? / ¿Cuántos ambientes hay en tu casa?
  • There are six rooms. / Hay seis ambientes.
  • How many chairs are there in your dining room? / ¿Cuántas sillas hay en tu comedor?

Basándote en los ejemplos anteriores, ¿que significa "how many" y cómo se usa? ¿Cómo se construye una pregunta con "how many"?¿Cómo se contestan preguntas con "how many"?

¿Puedes encontrar esos patrones en los ejemplos anteriores? Lee otra vez los ejemplos y nota cómo se aplican en estos los cinco puntos que acabas de leer. Recuerda que en la forma singular, debes usar "a" o "an" dependiendo de el sonido inicial de la siguiente palabra. Si es el sonido de una vocal, debes usar "an".
